Calling All Passionate Plein Air Painters
Registration ends midnight May 15th

An Immersive Plein Air Expedition from Beijing to Shanghai
Join us for a 16-day Plein Air Magazine painting expedition through China’s most visually powerful and varied environments—from the Great Wall to the mist-shrouded karst peaks of Guilin, through ancient river villages, and into the urban contrasts of Shanghai.
Each location offers painters subject matter on a scale and level of complexity rarely encountered elsewhere. The journey is designed around sustained time at the easel, with thoughtful pacing and logistics handled—allowing you to focus fully on painting, observation, and creative growth.
Beijing • Guilin & Yangshuo • Lishui • Luzhi • Shanghai
⦿ Paint on location near the Great Wall—one of the most monumental subjects a landscape painter can encounter, with 3–4 hours of dedicated working time.
⦿ Work the karst landscapes of Guilin and Yangshuo across multiple sessions, where towering limestone formations and river valleys challenge everything you know about composition and depth.
⦿ Set up your easel in ancient villages and river towns—Guanli Village, Luzhi, the fishing communities of Taihu Lake—where architecture, water, and daily life intersect.
⦿ Paint Shanghai's Suzhou River district, capturing the contrast between historic China and contemporary urban life.
⦿ Travel with a small group of committed painters, supported by local guides, translators, and optional demonstrations from Chinese master artists—all logistics handled, every day designed around painting.

Painting on location near the Great Wall—one of the most powerful subjects a landscape painter can face.
The scale hits you the moment you arrive. Stone walls climbing mountain ridges. Watchtowers fading into haze. A structure so massive it changes where the horizon sits.
You'll have 3–4 hours of real painting time in a section we chose for strong visuals and fewer crowds. This isn't a quick photo stop. It's a working session at one of the world's most recognized sites.
Most painters only imagine subjects like this. You'll actually paint one.

This is the visual heart of the trip!
Chinese painters have been drawn to the karst landscapes of Guilin and Yangshuo for centuries. Now it's your turn.
Limestone towers rise straight out of river valleys and rice paddies. Morning mist hangs between the peaks. Water mirrors stone. The shapes don't look like anything in Western landscape painting—vertical, jagged, stacked in layers that make you rethink depth and composition.
You'll paint here over multiple sessions, working the Li River region from different angles. A river cruise gives you hours on the water, watching the landscape pass. An evening open-air performance shows you how this scenery has shaped local culture for generations.

Between the monumental landscapes, you’ll find quieter subjects with their own power.
In places like Guanli Village, Luzhi, and the fishing communities around Taihu Lake, daily life moves at a different pace. Stone bridges. Canal reflections. Weathered architecture. Laundry drying on bamboo poles. Boats tied to ancient docks.
These locations offer human-scale scenes—the kind of subject matter that rewards patience and close observation. You’ll paint architecture, water, figures, and the small details that give a place its character.
Several evening sessions include costumed minority models for portrait and figure work. If you want to push beyond the landscape, the opportunity is there.

The trip opens in Beijing and closes in Shanghai—giving you a chance to paint contemporary China alongside its historic roots.
In Shanghai, you’ll work along the Suzhou River, capturing old buildings and street scenes where the city’s layers show. The Bund district offers architectural contrast: European-style facades against a modern skyline. The Yuyuan area provides traditional gardens and market life.
This isn’t the main focus of the trip, but it matters. Painting Shanghai gives you range. It shows you how much China contains—and how much your eye can adapt when the subject keeps changing.

Your first days in China introduce you to the scale of what’s ahead.
You’ll visit Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City—sites that set the historical context for everything that follows. Then you’ll paint your first session in the Temple of Heaven park, a classical imperial garden with strong shapes and mature trees.
A visit to Beijing’s largest art supply store lets you stock up on materials (Chinese pigments and brushes are excellent and affordable). And dinner with local artists offers a chance to connect with China’s contemporary painting community before you head into the countryside.

In Shanghai, you’ll visit Qinggu Art Ceramic Gallery for a hands-on session in traditional Chinese porcelain painting.
Using blue and white glaze techniques passed down for generations, you’ll paint your own porcelain piece—fired and ready to take home before you leave. It’s a chance to work in a completely different medium, guided by craftspeople who’ve spent their lives mastering it.
This isn’t a tourist activity. It’s a window into a parallel painting tradition—one that shaped Chinese aesthetics for centuries.

Conclude your journey at the magnificent Neuschwanstein Castle, where fantasy meets reality.
We'll cross the border into Germany to Paint this nineteenth-century masterpiece from lesser-known vantage points that showcase both its architectural grandeur and its stunning natural setting in the Bavarian Alps. You'll visit three countries: Switzerland, Germany and Italy.

After 16 days painting across China—from the Great Wall to Shanghai—extend your experience to Xi'an, home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries in history.
The Terracotta Army has stood guard over China's first emperor for more than two thousand years. Thousands of life-sized clay soldiers, each with a unique face, arranged in battle formation underground. The scale is staggering. The craftsmanship is humbling. For any artist interested in figurative work, historical subject matter, or simply understanding the ambition of ancient Chinese artistry, this is required viewing.
Beyond the warriors, Xi'an offers the Shaanxi Museum of History, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, and a walk along the Ancient City Wall—one of the best-preserved fortifications in China. The Famous Hundred Dumplings Banquet. The calligraphy shops and antique stalls of Shuyuanmen Ancient Culture Street.
And if weather and schedule allow, we'll fit in one more painting session before you head home.
This is the right ending for painters who want the full picture—not just what China looks like today, but where it came from.

This is not a structured workshop. The focus is on painting time and location access, not classroom instruction. That said, optional demonstrations from Chinese master artists will be available at select locations, and you’ll be painting alongside a group of committed artists—plenty of informal learning happens naturally.
A lot. The main trip includes 13 dedicated plein air sessions over 16 days. Most painting sessions run 3–4 hours. This is a working trip designed for artists who want serious brush time.
This trip is built for committed painters—people who already have an active plein air practice and want to push their work in new directions. It’s not designed for beginners seeking foundational instruction. If you’re comfortable painting independently outdoors and want an immersive experience, you’ll fit right in.
Moderate to challenging. Expect daily walking on uneven terrain, stairs at historic sites, and outdoor painting in variable weather (temperatures range from 40°F in Beijing to 75°F in Guilin). You’ll be working on location for 3–4 hours at a time, often standing. Some travel days are long. Pack comfortable shoes, dress in layers, and come prepared to work.
Small—designed to maintain quality painting access and personal attention. We’re targeting approximately 40 participants. If demand is high, we may add a second bus, but the experience will remain intimate.
Yes. Spouses, partners, or guests who appreciate cultural travel are welcome. While the group paints, non-painting guests will have access to local guides and alternative activities. Everyone shares meals and cultural experiences together.
Chinese cuisine can accommodate many dietary needs with advance notice. Please let us know about any allergies or restrictions when you register. Note: strict gluten-free diets may be more challenging to accommodate—contact us to discuss specifics.

Shanghai/Luzhi: 50–60°F days, 45–55°F evenings
Pack layers. A light jacket for evenings. Rain gear just in case.
Most painters prefer to bring their familiar materials. That said, Chinese art supplies—pigments, brushes, paper, canvas—are high quality and affordable. We’ll visit Beijing’s largest art supply store on Day 2 if you want to stock up or experiment.
For flying with paints and solvents, we’ll provide packing guidance before the trip.
It happens. If conditions make outdoor work impossible, you’ll have reference photos from the trip and comfortable indoor spaces to paint. The schedule has enough flexibility to adapt.
Yes. Hotels provide WiFi. Note that some Western websites and apps (Google, Facebook, Instagram) are blocked in China—consider downloading a VPN before you travel.
China is generally very safe for travelers. Our local guides will be with the group throughout. You’ll have emergency contact information, hotel details, and support at every stage. We recommend traveling with a buddy during free time and keeping hotel information on you.
Chinese Yuan (CNY/RMB). Money exchange is available at hotels and banks in Beijing, Yangshuo, Lishui, Luzhi, and Shanghai. Mobile payment apps (Alipay, WeChat Pay) are widely used—we’ll provide setup guidance. Credit cards are accepted in major cities but less common in rural areas. Eric traveled his entire 2024 trip without cash, using apps only.
